THE DERAILING EDUCATION SECTOR IN NIGERIA BY TIMILEHIN OGUNDIPE (TIMZZY)
We must admit that the way our national leaders are handling the education sector is very bad, as the education sector is not been taken as important as others. Following the budget for this year, the allocated fund for this year is #50 billion; making it the lowest allocated budget for a sector, the Nigeria education sector is dwindling really derailing.
The state of our education sector is worse, and worse in deed Student’s population soared in the past 20 or 30 years, the numbers of schools and volume of infrastructure for education remains stagnant, sometimes shrinking to rot or decay. The classes are crowded, amenities like laboratories and library has been outdated, no adequate recreational facilities. OAU for example, part of the tuition fees, we paid some certain amount of money for sporting activities and still yet anytime we want to use the sport facilities a certain amount of money is still been paid again.
According to a liable source; in late 80’s and 90’s Public schools have large grounds for sporting and recreational facilities.
The derailing has gone beyond amenities alone it as also cross across lecturers’ welfarism, allowances also provision of basic amenities for the students like food and shelter (Accommodations) provisions are also things of the part and nosedived.
Now in tertiary institution student populace outweighs infrastructure like classes, hostels, libraries, and laboratories etc of all which are overstretched in the process
One thing is clear according to the history I have gathered in 60’s and 70’s when free education at all levels sway in western Nigeria, The resources at the disposal of government was a lot more limited than what is obtained now. Yet, the government was more focused and better organized, the project ran smoothly and funding was not an issue to be discussed in the educational sector.
The question now is what exactly is the role of government in the education sector? The excuse that limited resources at government’s disposer are causing the rot in education is untenable because resources will always be limited (Resources was more limited in the 60s and 70s, yet the education sector worked out, students of the tertiary institution enjoyed free education, free shelter and free three-square meal per day).
Also, nowadays in our institutions, there is no stable academic calendar, due to different problems been faced by the education sector which maybe increment in the tuition fee, NASU SSANU, NAAT and other academic group protesting for their own interest which may lead to the school closure.
Following the eight month’s closure of LAUTECH, the school academic calendar has been disrupted. A student said, “2015 I was in part 1, 2016 I am was still in part 2, 2017 he was still in part two and the two state governors who co-owned the varsity and never get any pinch to re-opened the school”.
Also looking at our education sector, It really corruption that’s the cause of the derailing using OAU as an example, according to the Architectural plan of the school, The structure of the school today, it is only one out of four of the planned structure that was built as a result of decrease in the price of Cocoa then the project was stopped but when Crude oil came due to negligence the project was never continued.
In my own opinion
I will advise our current leaders to follow the part of the past leaders because in their own era, education sector was the prioritized and it was so in order to develop the country. if we look at most of our leaders they all enjoy on scholarship or the other, they also benefitted from programs which makes them to go and travel abroad free but today, how many programmes are been ensued for the benefits of the student, instead education is been discourage by making it more tougher and more difficult, by increments in school fees and no high standards, low pro vision of adequate facilities, mismanagements of funds also.
