NEGLIGENCE OF NIGERIANS: PATH WAY TO FAILURE: WAYS OUT OF SITUATIONS (1) By: Timilehin Ogundipe
Recently, Nigeria Universities Commission made a visit to the so-called Great Ife University, Obafemi Awolowo University, through my research, I was made to realize that some part of the structure and culture of NUC is to always supervise, access and validate all colleges, faculties and departments in all federal and State universities In Nigeria. These operation is always been embarked upon every four years to check whether each department’s curriculum is up-to-date, to check the standard of laboratory equipment, if its a conducive learning serene and other special duties which may include departmental programmes etc. the last time Nigeria Universities Commission made there last visit to OAU was 2012/2013 Academic session, during there last visit some department have been placed on probation, those departments include; Dept. of Microbiology, Faculty of Education, Dept. Of Political Science, Chemistry and Physics department just to mention few of them.
Again, 2016/17 academic session, NUC announced their visit to the great citadel of learning, and we can see the way some of the department and faculties reacted to the announcement; For a whole week in the department of physics all the practical that was supposed to take place was suspended, due to repairs and refurbishments of the laboratory and the equipment therein(All because of NUC visits), the same thing happened in the department of Microbiology, some of there laboratories were renovated, equipment were added to there lab, offices were repainted, according to a student of the department, during the week of there visit, some air-conditioner that have never worked was put on, also same thing happened in the department of Chemistry(White House), some part of the building were renovated, same thing happened in department of political science, faculty of education and other department that was on probation.
What am I driving at, there is the attitude and negligence on Nigerians path, they don’t move a mountain until they are going to get affected, why can’t all those development be done if the pressure is not there, because the department or faculty can be shutdown from operating. Every stakeholder in the university community knows that the school is in dire need of more lecture theatres as the existing ones does not have enough capacity to contain the crowd of admitted students, but look at it today, they are busy building a gigantic senate building to replace the old one which is still good in shape, accompanied the overcrowded hostels as a result of unlimited space with the university authorities doing little or nothing to about it
To be continued……….
