Auto Accident Occurs At University Senate Building, No Casualties Recorded

It was an atmosphere of mixed emotions around the University Senate Building on the evening of Sunday, 23rd January 2017 as a car ran into the transformer supplying the building. Alerted by the loud noise generated from the collision, students and staff nearby quickly rushed to the scene of the incident. Luckily, there were no casualties even though the car involved was greatly damaged. When asked what had caused the accident, the driver of the car claimed that the brakes of the car had failed and he naturally opted for the nearest obstacle to break the motion of the car. This incident, despite its non-casualty, raises the number of auto accidents on the Obafemi Awolowo University Campus over the past few months. Credits:Oaupeeps

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE, NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS) CONDOLENCE MESSAGE TO THE VICTIMS OF UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI SUICIDE BOMB ATTACK

As reported by Al-jazeera, at least four people were killed and 15 others injured in a suicide bomb attack on a university campus. The entire panorama of NANS Senate Secretariat is overwhelmed with deep sense of melancholy and lugubriousness. We cannot hold our eyes not to shed tears – our minds have become uncontrollably depressed. With our melancholic mood, we discover terrorism is a social disease that needs proper diagnosis. Until and unless the Federal Government properly diagnoses it, this ugly dramas cum uncanny scenarios will persist.   Nobody would gain solace in contradicting the incontrovertible fact – the fact that, of all fundamental rights a human being is entitled to enjoy – the right to life remains the most germane. This is not an attempt to render all other fundamental and foundational rights such as rights to dignity of human person, freedom of speech, freedom of movement et cetera valueless or useless. It is just a critical attempt to inform the people of

"Together in unity, we shall never raise our voice anyhow but we shall improve the impacts of our argument through proper negotiation" - I arrived at Agodi secretariat Ibadan by 9:15am as a result of challenges I met while coming to Ibadan. . This is coming as a rather unexpected blow to the students whose hopes had already been raised by Ajimobi’s promise during the protest Monday that LAUTECH will resume on or before February 1st. Dr. Biodun Olaniran buttressed on the demands of ASUU. “The demands,” he said, “are very clear, and if there is any will on the part of the government, they are not difficult to meet.” While explaining that the union had both long and short term demands from the government, he went further to state the short term demands which must be met before the agree to resume. The short term demands, are as follows: 1) That the government pays their owed 7 months arrears, and; 2) That they state, clearly, their plans for future funding of the institution. To achieve the first, he said, the two owner-state government should agree between themselves and then make money available for the payment. He went on to mock the N500 million which Ajimobi revealed he and his counterpart, Ar

Nigeria could teach the west Africa lessons

A trip is often defined by its urprises, so here are my biggest revelations from six days in Lagos, Nigeria. Most of all, I found Lagos to be much safer than advertised. It is frequently described as one of the most dangerous cities on earth. Many people told me I was crazy to go there, and some Nigerian expats warned me I might not get out of the airport alive. The reality is that I walked around freely and in many parts of town. I didn’t try to go everywhere or at all hours, and I may have been lucky. Yet not once did I feel threatened, and I strongly suspect that a trip to Lagos is safer than a trip to Rio de Janeiro, a major tourist destination. (In my first trip to Rio I was attacked by children with pointed sticks. In my second I found myself caught in a gunfight between drug lords). Many Lagos residents credit the advent of closed-circuit television cameras for their safety improvements. So if you’re an experienced traveler, and tempted to visit Africa’s l

For once let's applaud our President, Buhari Muhammadu

Image
Buhari The beginning of a new year such as now, offers a good opportunity for Nigerians as a people to take a second look at the previous year 2016 and its catalogue of negative events. Such a review will no doubt be helpful especially if it can draw attention to the way forward. In other words, to make 2017 a better year, we need to avoid a recurrence of the negative events of last year. Arriving at the solution to our problems may not be an easy task but we imagine that giving credit occasionally to whom it is due is a wise approach. It is obviously superior to the current trend whereby everybody is a critic in a game in which only President Buhari is perceived to be at fault all the time. The recent crisis in Kaduna is probably a good example of an issue in which the President has been hastily blamed. Kaduna is a state with its own governor that was elected to run the day to day affairs of the state. According, Buhari should not be the first to intervene i

Fayose’s removal plot: APC, PDP trade words

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has dismissed the allegation by Governor Ayodele Fayose that the party was plotting his removal through the manipulation of the judiciary to re-open Army Panel report on the 2014 governorship poll to have his election victory reversed. Fayose had in a letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, accused former Governor Segun Oni and Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, of clandestine moves to coerce the judiciary to use Army Panel report to reverse his election victory, praying the CJN to resist the move to preserve democracy and integrity of the judiciary. But APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, described the allegation as unfounded and baseless. Accusing Fayose of crying wolf where none exists, Olatunbosun said there was no meeting where Fayemi and Oni met to boast that he would be removed, noting that the governor was only jittery and afraid of the consequences of his many

Motor Sport kicks off in Nigeria with Eleko Motor race

The 2016 Eleko Motor Race may have come and gone but the memories will remain with the spectators and participants for a long time to come. Prior to this edition of the event, one may have wondered about the level of interest in motorsport around these parts. Well, going by the number of participants and spectators at the scenic Eleko Beach proves that this is growing phenomenon in Nigeria. Activities started with a drivers briefing on Friday 16th December at Basilico Restaurant V.I. This involved drivers and navigators, volunteers, race control team, timekeepers and the race director. This pre-race meeting focused on the Vehicle inspection and accreditation. Don’t be carried away by social media, Biobaku cautions students

Image
UNDERGRADUATES have been called upon to focus on their academics or risk affecting their future adversely by being carried away by social media. The call was made by a lecturer in Lagos State University, School of Communication, Mr Lanre Biobaku, who said social media has made many graduates seek the easy way, thereby seeing entertainment excellence as the height of achievement. “Undergraduates should remain focused and committed, as the rush for entertainment excellence occasioned via social media, will fade. Again, I disagree with the assertion that academic excellence is not accorded the same recognition as entertainment excellence. What you see is that entertainment excellence is usually  over hyped but less enduring. While academic excellence is more enduring and prestigious even though it is less financially rewarding.” “So, for undergraduates to achieve academic excellence and avoid being unduly exposed to social vices, they have to concentrate, more rigorously, on studyin

Ogbeni Rauf AregbesolaAregbesola and Chief Ajimobi Gov of Osun and Oyo state respectively. Governors Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State and Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State have appealed to the striking workers of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, to remain calm while the two owner states find solution to their problems. Workers of the institution have been on prolonged strike for about seven months over unpaid salaries. The two governors in a joint statement in Osogbo yesterday said the development was deeply regretted. Academic activities have been put on hold as a result of the industrial action embarked upon by the academic and non-academic staff of the university. This is due to the challenges faced by the owner states in fulfilling salary obligations to categories of workers in the institution. But the governors in the statement declared that “this is not due to lack of will on their part but the dire financial headwinds in the country, affecting all tie
