Savanna States During the 16th century the Songhai Empire reached its peak, stretching from the Senegal and Gambia rivers and incorporating part of Hausaland in the east. Concurrently the Sayfawa dynasty of Kanem-Bornu reconquered its Kanem homeland and extended control west to Hausa cities not under Songhai authority. Largely because of Songhai's influence, there was a blossoming of Islamic learning and culture. Songhai collapsed in 1591 when a Moroccan army conquered Gao and Timbuktu. Morocco was unable to control the empire and the various provinces, including the Hausa states, became independent. The collapse undermined Songhai's hegemony over the Hausa states and abruptly altered the course of regional history. Kanem-Bornu reached its apogee under mai Idris Aluma (ca. 1569-1600) during whose reign Kanem was reconquered. The destruction of Songhai left Borno uncontested and until the 18th century Borno dominated northern Nigeria. Despite Borno's hegemony the Hausa st

IMF raises 2017 global economic growth forecast to 3.6%

The International Monetary Fund, IMF, yesterday, announced an upward review of its forecast for global economic growth in 2017 to 3.6 per cent, citing increased momentum of economic activities around the world. Hausa states By the 11th century some Hausa states - such as Kano, Katsina, and Gobir - had developed into walled towns engaging in trade, servicing caravans, and the manufacture of various goods. Until the 15th century these small states were on the periphery of the major Sudanic empires of the era. They were constantly pressured by Songhai to the west and Kanem-Bornu to the east, to which they paid tribute. Armed conflict was usually motivated by economic concerns, as coalitions of Hausa states mounted wars against the Jukun and Nupe in the middle belt to collect slaves or against one another for control of trade. Islam arrived to Hausaland along the caravan routes. The famous Kano Chronicle records the conversion of Kano's ruling dynasty by clerics from Mali, demonstrating that the imperial influence of Mali extended far to the east. Acceptance of Islam was gradual and was often nominal in the countryside where folk religion continued to exert a strong influence. Nonetheless,

WRONG VIEW OF LOVE

Image
I believe love should be unconditional, but these days both the male and female gender are guilty of this; Most guys fall in love with ladies because of one thing or the other for example, I have heard a guy saying he loved a lady because of her facial beauty and also because of her beautiful voice, which means if this things are are gone he would no longer love her???, also I have heard of a lady saying she love a guy because he is rich,he gives generously which connotes that if the guy is no longer rich and could not give "generously" again, the love she had for the guy will fade out???     So many people believe love is a game, love is a business in which you give in and take out, you invest and make gains, believe me those are wrong views of what the true love is. Love should be natural, love should be virgin, love should be without strings whether for guys or ladies when loving it should be without rules, it should be without merit nor demerits it should not be with an

I appreciate my lecturers especially the paediatricians because without the knowledge they imparted in me, I wouldn’t have achieved this. I’m also grateful to UNIPORT for giving me the platform to achieve my dreams. The cash reward was inconsequential to me because following this award, I was already recognised at my induction ceremony and the smile on the faces of my family members and friends made the entire journey worthwhile. The Chief Medical Director, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Prof. Aaron Ojule, also offered myself and 24 of my

The Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose has finally reacted to the latest huge discovery of about N13bn cash at an apartment in Ikoyi.

Image
In a statement released by his aide, Lere Olayinka, Fayose described the APC-led government as a "Government of the more you look, the less you see" His statement reads; "Yesterday, it was made public that the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) claimed ownership of the $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23, 218,000 seized on Wednesday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from Osborne Towers, a luxury residential complex in Ikoyi, Lagos. This, to my mind is one cover-up too many and this federal government seeming plot to protect the original owner of both the money and the apartment where it was found has further shown that the anti-corruption fight is political, selectselective and therefore a ruse. Nigerians should recall that I have consistently maintained that the APC-led federal government was not fighting any corruption. Rather, the government is using the anti-corruption fight as a major political tool to cripple opposition and turn

Goodluck Jonathan's Easter message to Nigerians

Image
On this Easter, I think about the unconditional love that Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, had for us to the extent that He gave His life for our salvation on Good Friday. My reflections also take my mind back to His resurrection by God on Easter. What a lesson for us of what sacrifice can achieve and the benefits it can bring to mankind generally and individually! This Easter, I call on all, whether Christian or Muslim, to emulate Christ and sacrifice something for your nation, for your families and for yourselves. Was it not John F Kennedy who famously said "ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” Let us not ask ourselves who will change our nations for the better. Let us instead take a look in the mirror and ask how we can change our nations for the better. Indeed, as somebody once said, change begins with me. It begins with you. Let this Easter be the beginning of a positive change in the nations of the world. F

2017 EASTER MESSAGE TO THE NATION FROM PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI

I congratulate our Christian brothers and sisters on the celebration of this year’s Easter. I rejoice with you on this historic occasion signifying the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, redemption over condemnation, and hope over despair. The commemoration of this special season in Christianity, is always preceded by fasting, piety, humility, penance and prayers of intercession in the build up to the death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday, an event which reunited man with his Creator. The message of Easter is filled with themes of love, faith, sacrifice, dedication, commitment, fulfilment of prophecy, hope, expectation and victory, as espoused in the Scriptures and the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate yet another Easter, I urge all Nigerians to live peacefully with one another and do their utmost to make Nigeria a beautiful place to reside. In the almost two years of this administration, we have worked hard to meet the expectat

Kanem-Bornu Empire Bornu's history is closely associated with Kanem, which had achieved imperial status in the Lake Chad basin by the 13th century. Kanem expanded westward to include the area that became Bornu. The mai (king) of Kanem and his court accepted Islam in the 11th century, as the western empires also had done. Islam was used to reinforce the political and social structures of the state although many established customs were maintained. Women, for example, continued to exercise considerable political influence. The mai employed his mounted bodyguard and an inchoate army of nobles to extend Kanem's authority into Bornu. By tradition the territory was conferred on the heir to the throne to govern during his apprenticeship. In the 14th century, however, dynastic conflict forced the then-ruling group and its followers to relocate in Bornu, where as a result the Kanuri emerged as an ethnic group in the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.  The northern kingdoms of the Savanna Trade was the key to the emergence of organized communities in the savanna portions of Nigeria. Prehistoric inhabitants adjusting to the encroaching desert were widely scattered by the third millennium BC, when the desiccation of the Sahara began. Trans-Saharan trade routes linked the western Sudan with the Mediterranean since the time of Carthage and with the Upper Nile from a much earlier date, establishing avenues of communication and cultural influence that remained open until the end of the 19th century. By these same routes, Islam made its way south into West Africa after the 9th century AD. By then a string of dynastic states, including the earliest Hausa states, stretched across the western and central Sudan. The most powerful of these states were Ghana, Gao, and Kanem, which were not within the boundaries of modern Nigeria but indirectly influenced the history of the Nigerian savanna. Ghana declined in the 11th century but was succeeded

KANTE CAN'T ACCEPT WORLD LABEL

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has dismissed suggestions he ranks among the world’s best players. N’Golo Kante . Kante won the Premier League title with Leicester last term and has established himself as a key cog in Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side following a £32million summer move. The France international will win a second successive top flight medal if Chelsea can hold off Tottenham in the race for the league crown and has won plaudits for his energetic, combative displays in deep midfield. But Kante has brushed off talk he should be considered among the best talents on the planet “Last season we were champions with Leicester and at the moment we are top of the league with Chelsea. “That’s why people put it on me but it is not me. Falcao keeps fortunate Monaco on title track

Image
Radamel Falcao marked his first start in six weeks with the only goal of the game as Monaco cemented their position at the top of Ligue 1 with a 1-0 win at Angers. Falcao’s goal came just after the hour mark and against the run of play, and Monaco were holding on at the end against in-form opponents at the Stade Raymond Kopa. The result extended the principality side’s run without defeat in the league to 13 matches and moved them four points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand on Nice, who won 2-1 at Lille on Friday. Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain — who hammered Monaco 4-1 in last weekend’s League Cup final — can cut their lead back down to three points if they win at home to Guingamp on Sunday evening. For Monaco it was the perfect preparation for their Champions League quarter-final first leg away to Borussia Dortmund in Germany on Tuesday as they stay on course to win their first French title since Claude Puel’s 2000 vintage.

Neymar better than Messi, Ronaldo – Romario

Romario believes Neymar is the best player in the world, ahead of Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi and Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo . Neymar, Messi & Ronaldo Neymar has played a starring role for Brazil, scoring six goals in CONMEBOL qualifying to help the South American giants become the first nation to book a spot at next year’s World Cup. The 25-year-old has also been in good form for La Liga titleholders Barca this season, netting 15 goals in all competitions as he bagged his 100th goal for the Spaniards last week. And Brazilian icon Romario feels Neymar has surpassed Messi and Ronaldo, who have shared the past nine Ballon d’Or awards. “Nowadays, Neymar is Brazil’s biggest star. He’s the best player in the world right now, with all due respect to Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – which, particularly, I believe has been much inferior to the other two,” he told ESPN. “For what he’s been doing both for Barca and Selecao, it’s about time Neymar is elected the number on

The 28-year-old, who has scored three goals for the Black Cats, returned to action as a substitute in Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Leicester and Moyes is pleased to have him back for the visit of Manchester United on today. “We have missed Victor [Anichebe] because, if you look, we have not scored enough goals this season,” said Moyes. “We have had as our attacking players Fabio Borini, Adnan Januzaj, Wahbi Khazri, Jermain Defoe and the other was Victor Anichebe, who gave us a completely different type of centre-forward from all the others. “He was the only one we had different, so if he got injured then we were going to be in trouble. LALONG UNVEILS PATH TO PROSPERITY

An investigation by the Economic Confidential provides shocking discovery that fifteen states of the federation may go bankrupt as their Internally Generated Revenues, IGR, in 2015 were far below 10% of their Federation Account Allocations, FAA, in one year from June 2015 to May 2016. Even though Plateau State falls amongst this prediction, the body language of Governor Simon Lalong inspires confidence as he stood this faithful day to unveil the Plateau State “SMART Revenue System Process” to the people of Plateau State. The occasion was the 3rd edition of the Plateau State Stakeholders’ Roundtable Engagement on Taxation that attracted captains of industries and the private sector. The unveiling signals a bold move to aggressively improve the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the state through strategic thinking. As the governor is being taken through the revalidation of his tax identification number (TIN) in a new resolve to revolutionize the economic architecture of the state,
